Have you ever found yourself in one of those situations with your children, or anyone for that matter, where you said something that you were so confident in to, only minutes later realize you were wrong? The other day I did. And the situation involved this little visitor….
You see, when I went to cut the grass for the first time this year each time I would engage the blade to start spinning the mower would die. So, I climbed off the mower and raised the deck to see what the problem was. Nothing. So, I got back on the mower, and lowered the blade ALL THE WAY DOWN to see if I could find a problem on top of the deck. And did I ever find a surprise. As I lowered the deck down I heard an awful noise and out ran three baby bunnies. Poor momma had built her nest on top of our mower’s deck and it was preventing the pulley from spinning the blades. Two of the bunnies took off like a flash so when this little guy hid next to the house I ran inside to get the children. I wanted them to see from the window.
And after much pleading and begging I allowed the children to go out to the porch to see. And then before I knew it they were in the grass begging to try to catch it. Well, I had seen how fast the other bunnies had scrambled across the street so I was sure I had nothing to worry about. Okay, I said. Go ahead and try to catch it.
Well, they did catch it. And then I was stuck. Four pairs of expectant eyes all watching me, pleading with me to let them keep it. But I knew we couldn’t. I grew up on a farm and have learned the hard way that God made wild animals to be wild and most times they won’t eat or drink once you catch them and then they don’t last long. I didn’t want that.
So, though it was hard to do and tears were shed, we said good-bye to our little visitor. And now I am left with another dilema.
