Words of Wisdom – Something to Ponder

It was enough to cause heads-of-state to scratch their heads and stamp their feet. What was a rag-tag group of men, without proper uniforms, rags wrapped around their feet in lieu of boots, chewing on leather to quell the gnawing hunger in their stomachs, doing fighting and winning a war against two of the best trained and most well-equipped armies of the world (the British and the Prussians)?

Simon Peter was not the brightest of the bright. Instead of spending time indoors pouring over scrolls filled with Rabinical law, he was busy bringing in nets filled with fish. His back was strong, his hands were rough, and his mouth had a mind of its own. Why would God choose this man to be the “rock” of the Church?

John Doe didn’t finish high school; he always considered himself more of a “hands on” type of guy, and being shut indoors with books was torment. He owns a 90’s Ford van, his only transportation, and drives it daily to his job, where he earns a little over $10 an hour. He makes extra money by doing handy-man jobs on the weekends.
His wife, Jane, presides as queen over their little castle–a small 3-bedroom house filled with garage-sale furniture and thrift store clothing. They have 3 children. Their meals are simple, but healthy. They pray a lot, and they go to church. Their recreational life consists of trips to the park, get-togethers with friends and family, and an occasional movie at home, complete with popcorn. Most people think they are crazy.
John’s friends from high school drive around late model cars and make plans to fly out to the “big game”. Jane’s friends don’t even call her any more–she’s just too weird and doesn’t have the time or money to spend gossiping over lattes at Starbucks.
The Doe’s live by some basic principles. They love God and His Word, they love each other, and they love their kids. It’s because of these foundational principles that they decided to disciple and teach their own kids at home. After a little research, they took their tax-return money and bought some books and supplies. Their dining room table doubles as the “school room”, and instead of modern art, maps and charts adorn their walls.
There are millions of people like the Doe’s–those that are poor, “uneducated” and despised. Their kids grow up to be lovers of Jesus, have strong families, and become leaders in their communities. They even manage to out-perform their public-schooled counterparts in the academic arts.

It’s enough to make heads-of-state scratch their heads and stamp their feet.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? ! Cor. 1:18-20
