This Joyce Herzog reading program is a great option for all your homeschooling reading needs. You can use it to teach your child to read and then continue all the way up to having an independent reader ready to read paragraphs. We used the Scaredy Cat Reading System Level 1 ($75) with Katherine this spring to help her learn all of her letter sounds and names. This level is designed for children ages 3 and up depending on when you feel they are ready to start reading.
Katherine has loved this program and I have loved that it is the type of program that works great with a flexible homeschool routine like we have. For each stage of the program she gives you a great list of activities to use to help your child master the needed skills for that stage. Using fun songs, the creative story of “The Letter Master”, and fun flashcards and magnets this Level 1 program teaches your child their letter sounds and names. You get a huge packet of fun manipulatives with your purchase. It comes with a complete letter bingo game with lots of cards and a laminated spinner so that the whole family can play if you want! A great workbook that helps your little one to feel as if they are now a “big” kid with a real schoolbook and a teacher’s idea book help to make this a complete reading program. Katherine really loved having her own “reading” book even if it was just lots of letters to practice with. She has enjoyed the flashcards and magnets as well. The flashcards came on thick cardstock that I just had to cut apart. We have used these for flashcards to test her mastery of letter names as well as for practice putting the letters in order. The magnets have been fun too although I have found them to be a little small in a household with small children.
Overall my first experience with the Joyce Herzog Scaredy Cat Reading program has been a positive one. We are thoroughly enjoying it and I am seeing great results. Katherine is well on her way to knowing all of her letters and their sounds too! This program is a great option for a young learner that wants to learn their letters.
We enjoyed it too. :)
