Lone Star Learning Vocabulary Cards Review

I am not a big one on random vocabulary and spelling words for the most part. We use words that are misspelled during writing assignments and such for our spelling practice, but I love to give my children visual cues to help them understand words and to remember how to spell them. When Lone Star Learning sent me a copy of their Science Vocabulary Pictures, Set 1 ($29.99) I was very impressed with the quality of the vocabulary cards. The pictures are bright and colorful, the cards are sturdy and thick. These cards are not designed on a grade level scale, rather you buy the set that has the words in it that enhance the unit you are studying. For the most part, I feel, these cards would be best suited for any elementary and middle school aged child.

We have the Lone Star Learning Science vocabulary cards hanging up in our dining room/school area. I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I hung them up but I hung the vocabulary cards up in different groups that kind of went together. There is an animal group, weather, Earth science, and plants group. I have been so pleased with the results. The children have sat around the table during meal times and quizzed each other on the spelling of the words and tried to impress Daddy with knowing what the words meant too.

Shortly after I hung them up I had the older girls (ages 8 and 10) write down each of the words and look up a definition for that word to practice their dictionary skills. But since then they have used these cards most everyday. I am confident that they will not soon, if ever, forget what these science terms mean.

And with each card having pictures on it to help them better understand what each word means I feel as if they actually know these words and not just random definitions.

There was a mix up with the shipping at first and I actually ended up with two sets of cards to use. I was so impressed that Lone Start Learning didn’t ask me to hassle with boxing up and mailing back the wrong set. Let’s face it, even if it is shipping paid dragging five kids into the post office during your first trimester is not an easy task and I was dreading it. Imagine my surprise when the email came through that they would be sending me the cards I had requested but that I could KEEP the other set as well.

The other set that I got was the Target Vocabulary Cards, Set 1 . This set contains lots math words combined with fun pictures that help to define them as well. They are just as high quality and thickness as the science cards and are again not grouped by age but you just choose the group that contains the words you need for the study you are doing.

Overall, I highly recommend these cards to enhance any study that you might be doing. They are so versatile that you can use them again and again without the children getting bored or repetition. A well rounded vocabulary is essential to education in my opinion and these cards will prove to be a vital tool in equipping your children.
