Homeschool Update

It is January now and it just felt like a good time for a homeschool update. This has been one of our best years. We have found an amazing routine that is working for everyone most of the time. And while I feel as though anyone that would see me in motion during our “normal” school day would laugh at how I bounce from one child to another to the kitchen to laundry and back again with hardly a moment’s break from 9am until 2pm, it is working for us.

Our unit studies for science and history are affording us lots of “talk time” and learning as a family. We have studied in depth penquins, George Washington, the election process, and now Missouri state history so far this year. And thanks to the wonderful opportunities from the Review Crew we will be starting a new Zoology unit from Apologia. You can be looking for that review in February.

Maggie is still struggling with complete memorization of her multiplication tables but we are pushing on. While still practicing daily on those facts we have plunged into all things fractions. We are working on simplifying, adding, and subtracting fractions using recipes, pizzas, and paper.

We are doing lots and lots of reading as I have found it to be one of the best avenues of learning. I am striving to teach the children at a young age to learn and retain what they read, and then to be able to write about it so that others can learn too. I am praying that this will help them later in life if they choose to go to college..

So, how is your homeschool going this year? Are you using any products that you just love? Are you struggling in a certain area? I would love to hear what you are studying and using right now.
