With homeschooling comes LOTS and LOTS of stuff in your home, doesn’t it? And how does one manage all of this stuff? We are a family of 8 in a 1400 square feet home. We don’t have any “extra” space for non-essentials, but with homeschooling comes a lot of different essentials. School supplies, teacher supplies, office supplies, and even educational manipulatives just to name a few. There are lots of homeschool organization ideas but here are my tried and true ones. Today, how we organize books and completed work.
I have used lots and lots of systems over our homeschool journey but this system has lasted for two years and I am still liking how independent it makes the children and yet how organized everything is.
I have one closet where all of the books stay that we are not currently using each day and then we use the top of our computer desk as a bookshelf and then have two crates stacked beside it for the little guys things.
In each child’s 3 ring binder are dividers for the subjects that they are studying this year. When they are done with any paper it gets filed in their binder. Even the younger children who are using consumable books use the hole punch and file their papers in their binders each day. Some of the older children use one subject spiral notebooks for their math, science journals, and copywork but these also can be clipped into their binders.
We also use simple single subject spiral notebooks for things that require a lot of lined paper like math, nature journal, and creative writing. This allows us to keep all of the papers in order and saves us space in the binders. It also makes it easier to use past lessons as reference when a child is struggling.
This system of homeschool organization ideas has helped me to stream line record keeping and paper filing. It has helped to make my children more self-sufficient in that area and that is always a positive. Next post in this series will show you my system for school and office supplies.
