I am not sure if Aldi stores are nationwide or only in certain areas but they are in my area and I love that store. It is my main source of cheap (frugal), healthy food for my family. I can walk out of my Aldi store with a cart full to overflowing for less than $150. Here are my top 5 ways to save at Aldi.
1. Avoid Convenience Foods – Though they are much cheaper at Aldi than Walmart or Schnucks or other major grocery chains, convenience foods are still much more expensive and full of “junk” than making food at home. You can see a major cut in your food bill when you stop buying frozen pizzas, lunch meats, and ready made breakfast items.
2. Milk and Eggs – No one in my area can come close to Alid’s milk and egg prices (though I do on occasion find eggs comparable or cheaper by the case at Sam’s). My family goes through as much as 2 gallons of milk and 4 dozen eggs in a week. I have to shop where the best prices are if I am going to stay on a budget.
3. Produce – Their every day prices are great on produce but their weekly specials are just amazing at times. Many times I will buy up a bunch of the sale items and freeze or dehydrate or can it for later use. It really helps to keep my grocery budget lower than most while I am still feeding my family healthy food.
4. Canned Goods – With almost any needed canned item from fire roasted tomatoes to asparagus and corn and green beans, my local Aldi store carries a wide variety of canned goods at a great price. The quality is rival none. I love them all. The green beans are tender and yet not mushy. The corn “pops in your mouth” in the words of my children and isn’t tough and gummy to chew. The beans are cooked just right without tough skins. I haven’t found a canned good there that I didn’t love to cook with at Aldi.
5. Baking Staples – I have done the math and checked prices for months in a row and every time, hands down, Aldi comes out with the best price on things like flour, sugar,
