Hands of a Child – Math Lapbook Review

If you have read here for any length of time you already know my extreme love for Hands of a Child products. So when the TOS Crew was asked to review some of their lapbook kits I was so excited! We had never done a math lapbook so I choose their “Let’s Measure It” lapbook kit (on special now for only $5.00/regularly $12.00).

For our first math lapbook experience I was very pleased. This kit is all inclusive which I love about Hands of a Child. Pages are included for the “teacher” to read and explanations and examples are given for you to share with the students. Then for each section there is a different lapbook element for the student to work with. This math lapbook kit is designed for children in grades K-3 but we did this as a fun family summer assignment. I love that these kits truly are able to include all of the children in the family.

This particular lapbook helped the children with understanding the difference between weight, height, and volume. They gave great visuals to help the children understand the why and how the different units fit together and why specific units of measure are even needed. The examples were realistic and involved things that most of us use or see often. And even some fun examples too! What kid doesn’t want to talk about how much manure a cow can produce? This had my kids giggling up a storm.

Another aspect of Hands of a Child’s products that I love is the great “lesson plan” page that comes at the beginning of all of their kits. It helps you to break down the kit into manageable daily lessons and all the planning is done for you. It tells you what portion to read from the lesson pages and what lapbook elements go with that days assignment. It truly takes the guess work out of lapbooking! And the great “related reading” section helps you to take your unit study to the next level and incorporate other subjects and learning styles easily.

I think one of our favorite activities was one of the “bonus” ones from this kit. During this activity we wrote down how much each of the children weighed at birth and then talked about how much they had grown and how much they might still grow. And since we were still anticipating the birth of their sibling it was fun to hear their guesses of how much she would weigh too.

Our finished product - I love the memories of the different stages of learning that these lapbooks capture for me.
