Our current history read aloud is a review product from Knowledge Quest. This book has been fun and engaging for all of my children and I. Sacagawea is a down-loadable book ($3.99 for the complete set) that tells the story of this brave young woman from our nation’s history. There is one feature about this book that makes it incredibly unique to me and that is that it is an interactive book. The book has active links all through it that help you to make this history read aloud come alive.
And while this book is geared for children 10 and up primarily I have found that with a little help even my 6 year old is able to follow the story for the most part. The wonderfully specific story does have some wording in it that makes it better suited for children over 10 just because their vocabulary is better formed. Still other parts I have chosen to “reword” as the details of her slavery and domestic abuse were a little more detailed than I was comfortable sharing with my 10 and under children. I have, overall, been very impressed with this book. I have learned things that I never knew about Sacagawea. Did you know she was kidnapped as a young teen? Did you know that her and her sister were slaves together until her voyage with Lewis and Clark separated them? All of this and more make this story completely engaging even for adults who think they know the story of this brave woman explorer.
