Homeschool in The Woods – Lapbook Review

Home School in The Woods recently sent me their Hands-On History Lap-Pak: The 20th Century in America kit  download ($21.95) for review purposes. I couldn’t wait to dive into this study as I love history and the 20th Century is such a fun time period in our country’s history. So, I put a bunch of books on reserve at our local library and made plans to really study this unit. We have read books, watched video clips on YouTube and used Google Images to get a better understanding of this time in our country. I was even able to find some fun coloring pages of the famous architecture built during this time for the little guys to color while we were doing our study. The children have had a blast and they are retaining the information and looking forward to our time in this study each day.

This lapbook kit is a downloadable file geared for children in grades 3-8, although I used it for even Josiah who is in 1st grade and he has done just fine. Some of the lapbook elements I’ve had to help him with the writing and also explain some words in the lesson book to help him along but overall he has love this study and is doing great! And since we just build one lapbook for the whole family during these units I just pick and choose which elements fit his ability best and let him assemble that part and give the ones with more writing and such to the older girls.

During this unit study we learned about such great people as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, the astronauts of the space shuttle Challenger, and Billy Graham. We have talked about the invention of antibiotics as we know them, cars that are available to all people, and the Internet. This lapbook kit even comes with recipes of the 20th century foods!

The downloadable lapbook kit come with a 32 page printable booklet that stores inside the completed lapbook as well as suggested books for extra reading, all of the files that you need to create and assemble this lapbook complete with pictures to show you how to put it all together. The style of this lapbook is a different style than I have typically done but the pictures have made it easy to do and have allowed the children to help with the projects a little more independently than normal. But it is designed that you complete the entire unit  and then assemble the lapbook itself at the end. And since we haven’t completed the entire study I don’t have a completed project to show you, but here are some pictures of what we have been doing during this study.
