Homeschool math seems to be a struggle for so many families. It is the one subject that so many homeschool momma’s struggle to find a good fit for their families. I have seen and used many homeschool math programs but I have now heard of another math option. Touch Math is a multi-sensory program that is striving to banish math anxiety for all children. Katherine and I have been using their Pre-K program for the last few weeks and she loves it! We also received a set each of Touch Shapes, Texture Cards, and 3-D Numerals. This set retails for $267.00. The Pre-K set starts very basic and while labeled Pre-K Katherine has had no trouble at all with the material and she just turned 4. She won’t really be “Pre-K” until August. But the optional manipulatives have kept the learning fun and she is just breezing through the different modules in this program. And I am loving watching her master concepts that I never would have thought to teach her. She is even being introduced to graphing and patterns and is able to understand and is becoming proficient in these skills.
Katherine has had so much fun using the Touch Shapes especially. She has learned to recognize all of the shapes through playing with them. And she has figured out how to make pictures with these shapes. She loves them! The 3-D numerals have made for some fun games. We have practiced putting the numbers in order, finding the missing number, and what number comes next. I am proud to say that she is now proficient at the numbers 0-10 (6 and 9 sometimes still slip her up but that is to be expected or so I think).
For a child that loves coloring and worksheets this program is a perfect fit. The PDF file that you download and print has everything you need to teach the lessons to your child. It gives step by step instructions for the parent/teacher on how to teach the lesson, gives activities for introducing the concepts of the module and also a check list to give you confidence that your child is ready to move on. Since this is a downloadable file it is a great one time investment for the homeschooling family because it can be used for many years to come.
The worksheets in the Pre K set are just right for children of this age and their shorter attention spans. There is not a lot of “work” on any one page so the child feels the satisfaction of completion rather quickly. I think this is key in keeping little guys motivated and engaged. There is also a very helpful and detailed introduction section to the pdf file. It tells you all about the program, gives an overview of the skills taught and even has a handy homeschool checklist of optional resources specific for this homeschool math program.
We have had a lot of fun with this program. And while I am not a huge fan of the “touch points” or “number dots” that this system uses we have been able to use it fully and just not focus on teaching those. The touch points can be a great tool, but I was taught them in grade school and I used them as a crutch instead of just a tool. I was well into high school before I had memorized my math facts because I would just count the “dots” to solve the addition and subtraction. I might not have used my fingers but I may as well have. I really couldn’t do math without using them. This program does a great job as offering them as a tool to learn with but not focusing on using them all the time. I have really liked that. While this program takes a lot of one on one time, which is harder for a momma like me with other children to school, I have come to enjoy this time with my youngest daughter. It has proven to be a special time for just her and I and it was needed. This program is a wonderful homeschool math option.
