I am very new to dehydrating food. I have only recently begun this journey because, after searching for a long time, I was blessed with a Nesco dehydrator for review on Happily Domestic. I have been so busy exploring this great new way to preserve food, make healthy snacks for my family, and also to make cooking foods faster. And I am loving it more each day!
I never knew that many times you can cook foods that require a long cook time such as rice and beans, and then dehydrate them. Once they are dehydrated they can store on the shelf in an air tight jar or be vaccum sealed in plastic bags. When you are ready to serve these food then can be ready in a matter of minutes with some hot water.
I have made homemade fruit roll up from just plain old applesauce, I have dried banana chips and apple slices for homemade granola, and I have done a my own cilantro too! This is a great way to take advantage of sales in your area on fruits and vegetables. And dehydrating frozen vegetables couldn’t be easier!
When my local store has frozen veggies on sale at a great price, I grab lots and lots of bags but instead of worrying about freezer burn and power outage while my freezer is so full I start dehydrating those babies! They go straight from bag onto the trays of the dehydrator and after several hours they are ready to store in jars in my pantry.
If the art of dehydrating food intersts you I would like to invite you to visit my post over on HAPPILY DOMESTIC where you can enter to win a Nesco Dehydrator of your own. You can also see all of the other dehydrating that I have been up to.
I have thought about dehydrating foods before, but I didn’t know there were such a wide range of foods that could be dehydrated. Thanks for sharing.
