Growing Deeper Roots – Bible Reading – Post #4

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

Life is so busy isn’t it? But we as God’s daughters must make time for daily reading of God’s word. I have heard the Bible referred to as God’s love letter to His children. I love that image. Whenever you receive a letter from the love of your life doesn’t it make your heart skip? You open it with eager anticipation of what you will find. You don’t just lay it on the shelf without opening it. No, you pour over it. Maybe even read it multiple times. Just as we should with God’s Word.

His word is where He teaches us how to become more like Christ. We see God’s character through the scriptures and we should be challenged to become just like Him. For example, with the upcoming election in our nation, if we haven’t read His word we won’t know God’s morals. We won’t be able to make a choice that would make God smile.

If we want to be “a tree that is planted by the water” (Psalm 1:3) that grows strong and tall we must feed on that “water” which is the Bible. One prayer of mine for years is that God would make me so thirsty for His Word that nothing could keep me from it. I want to long for it like it was the choisest of desserts, the sweetest of honey. As if it was the most wel written love letter that anyone has ever received. Because it is all of that and so much more.

Here are a few ways that I incorporate Scripture into my very busy days –

  • verse cards on my kitchen sink
  • daily verse by email
  • Bible app on my phone
  • teach it to my children (this one is a two fold blessing!)
  • listen to a sermon instead of watching tv while folding laundry (many apps for your phone make this easy!)

As a homeschooling, pastor’s wife, mother of 5 I know how hard it is to fit it in. There are way too many days that I don’t hold the actual Bible in my hands. But that is why I try to memorize verses (which we will talk about in another post), have scripture all around my home and listen to Bible verses set to music. Do you have any neat ideas for spending time in the Word even on those days when you don’t get a chance to actually sit and read it? Please share with us!
